Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office Part 2

This lecture will review the prevention, recognition and the management of medical emergencies which can and do occur in the dental office. This presentation will be interactive, including audience response polling to enhance the learning experience.

Attendees will have access to a hand-out in advance so that more time will be spent listening, thinking and interacting.

Emergency topics to be covered:
• Syncope
• Orthostatic hypotension
• Hyperventilation
• Aspiration
• Asthmatic attack
• Allergic Reactions
• Anaphylaxis
• Hypoglycemia and Insulin Shock
• Angina
• Myocardial Infarction
• Cardiac arrest
• Stroke (CVA)
• Seizures and epilepsy
• Hyperthyroidism
• Hypothyroidism
• Adrenal Insufficiency

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will leave with enhanced medical knowledge along with simple approaches that can provide life-saving skills.
  • Participants will be better able to combine the didactic knowledge presented with the ability to manage an actual emergency situation.
  • Real emergency scenarios will be presented along with review of recognition and management protocols for each.
  • Upon completion, participants will have a better understanding what is necessary to manage medical emergencies in the dental setting.
