Dental professionals have elevated risks for burnout, mental illness, substance use disorder, and suicide. In addition, dentists have high rates of health-related disability and early retirement. Even in the absence of illness or disability, health optimization promotes personal and professional well-being, better patient care, and more successful practice. In this interactive workshop, attendees will explore occupational hazards of a career in dentistry, share strategies to promote wellbeing, identify barriers to help-seeking and help-acceptance, and consider ways to address unmet needs that are unique to the dental community.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the characteristics of dental professionals and the practice environment that promote or detract from health and wellness.
Practice calibrated vulnerability and use of narrative as strategies for change.
Describe available and needed resources to assist dental professionals who may be suffering in silence.
