People living with HIV are long-term patients in our practices. The dental team has a role in supporting patients with chronic disease and the accompanying comorbidities. An attentive medical and biopsychosocial assessment is recommended as can be done on many of our aged or medically more complex patients.
Use of screening tools is recommended for depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorder, The dental team can identify concerns and facilitate referrals to needed interventions. Team members can support medication adherence and help achieve an HIV undetectable viral load. Discussion will include treatment as prevention, “U=U” (undetectable equals untransmissible), PrEP and PEP (pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis). Tools are now available to help stop HIV transmission and help end the HIV epidemic. Join us for a good discussion and assessment skills that are relevant to many of your patients.
